Depend on Independence

As the country marks its 112th Independence Day on June 12, many Filipinos will remain dependent for one reason or another, literally or figuratively. Either the essence of independence is still far from their consciousness or have been forgotten for being unrealistic.

After all, consumers back home are not free from e-VAT and will continue to be abused by high electricity charges and rising fuel prices. Students will remain bound to overcrowded classrooms and poor patients will continue to share public hospital beds with others.

Overseas workers are free from bureaucratic red tapes but only temporarily while they are abroad, in locations where there are no embassies and consulates that will expose them to inefficient public service.

Independent-minded as they can be in Timbuktu, it is doubtful the OFW will be free from temptations, workplace intrigues, homesickness and anxieties of what’s happening to their loved ones back home.

More than celebrating Independence Day, it may be worthwhile to become independent at the personal level, such as taking the initiative to clean up the house without being told to do so or work parttime to earn a little allowance yourself instead of asking from mom or dad.

There are too many ways to mention. Independence is not absolute and fleeting. It’s better to enjoy and experience it while one can.

Para sa yo, nay

Sa mga anak na kapiling ang kanilang ina sa Mother’s Day, walang dahilan para hindi maipadama ang pagmamahal at taos-pusong pasasalamat sa taong pangunahing kumakalinga at nagmamahal sa kanila.

Anumang paraan ng pagsaludo sa mga nanay natin ay tiyak na ikasisiya nila. Kaya naman sa mga inang nagtatrabaho sa labas ng bansa, mahalaga na ang makatanggap ng text, tawag at liham o greeting card sa anak na nasa Pilipinas kung hindi man sila makapag chat, magkitakita o magkasalu-salo.

Sa amin naman dito sa The International Filipino, minarapat naming ikwento ang buhay ng ilang inang nagsasakripisyong magtrabaho sa ibang bansa para maitaguyod lamang ang mga anak. Sa ganitong paraan ay maipaalala naming ang tunay na diwa ng isang ina at ng Mother’s Day. Wala namang ibang dahilan kung bakit malayo ang maraming ina, at ama, sa piling ng anak kundi ang mabigyan sila ng maganda at aginhawang buhay.

Ang pakikipanayam at pagbabahagi ng karanasan ng ilang inang nasa abroad ay pagkilala na rin namin sa kanilang mahalagang tungkulin sa ating pamilya at lipunan. At sa pakikipag-usap namin, nalaman naming hindi
lang may edad ang isang ina. Mayroon ding mga kabataang ina na nakikipagsapalaran na sa malalayong
lugar para lang buhayin ang kanilang sanggol.

Karapatdapat din silang bigyang pugay dahil hindi biro ang mawalay sa wala pang muwang nilang anak sampu ng kanilang magulang at mga kapatid. Marami mang paraan ng pagbati sa mga nanay natin ngayong buwan ng
Mother’s Day, sapat na na suklian natin sila ng pagmamahal din, pasasalamat at pamumuhay ng tama habang sila ay malayo sa ating piling.
